Grumpy

Fashion trends The Sewing Lawyer cannot understand:

1.  "Cold shoulder" garments. So, it's warm enough not to have your shoulders covered, but not warm enough to make long sleeves uncomfortable? Sorry, that makes no sense.

This is attributed to Donna Karan here but had sold out at $238.

2.  Bell sleeves. There's such a long list of things you cannot really do while wearing them. Like eating, or putting on a coat.

Photo from here.

3.  Jumpsuits - unless you are an infant or enjoy stripping every time you need to use the bathroom, these are neither cute nor fun to wear.

Both of these available at Nordstrom's. Jumpsuit on left Hervé Léger, "only" $2,285 (CAD); on right, Vince Camuto $140.

You don't have to spend a lot to be really uncomfortable ... but you can.

4. Severely distressed denim (that came that way):

Not to pick on Nordstroms, but these can be purchased there for the princely sum of $1279 CAD. Ripped, or ripped off?

Enough!

  1. Hahaha! I'm going to be the antithesis!! Well almost. Those big crazy sleeves are impossible in jacket/coat wearing weather. I have a RTW cardigan with a slight bell sleeve that ties. I adore it. It isn't full length though, but it is so floppy when you're doing normal things.

    But!!!

The long sleeved cold shoulder really isn't much of a dichotomy. It's like wearing sleeveless (semi/formal) dresses in winter...it's fiiiiine.

I'm not sure if I'm abnormal or what but I've never had issues with using the bathroom and wearing a jumpsuit/romper. I mean, they aren't workwear, IMO so either you're wearing it for normal everyday stuff or to an event. I've mostly worn jumpsuits to events and I just don't get the fussing about the bathroom thing. Just how many times are people using the bathroom while they're out?!? I probably have 6 or 7 jumpsuits...

I have two pair of distressed jeans and one pair is pretty heavily distressed. Really love them! I do not however, like the jeans with actual giant holes in them where half the thigh is out.

Sorry but I think these trends will be around awhile!

  2. I thought the cold shoulder look came about because when aged arms don't look so good, the shoulders may still be good. A way to be covered and somewhat sexy at the same time for some.

Perhaps the full sleeves will lead to the return of capes and wraps.

  3. I don't get the cold-shoulder look either. It looks odd to me and unless you have super skinny shoulders, I don't think it looks very good on people. Bell sleeves are just an invitation to drag through your salad dressing. Jumpsuits don't bother me much, but they don't make anyone's backside look good. Ripped denim is just stupid. :D

  4. What MakeitAnyWear said. Allegedly, a woman's shoulders are the last to go. I agree with everything you said - I cannot get on board with any of these trends.

  5. So, don't mind the cold shoulder look but my autumn is 25 degrees and sunny so it kind of works and it would be ok in the warmer office. I don't get any clothes that cost thousands. That is marketing - more dollars than sense as I like to say. Often it is still mass produced, average to good quality fabric and I do believe people dump it just as quickly. My sister buys it all back at the op shop and looks trendy for a fraction of the cost. And the jeans... buy a pair that fits and cut into them .... save! LOL! Actually I'm glad this is about the 'fashion' as I thought it was about the bra journey and something wasn't working out. I'm watching that closely.

  6. I agree with you totally on these fashion trends. I did the jumpsuit thing 35 or 40 years ago and have no desire to wear them again. I definitely do not understand to bell sleeve trend, ripped jeans or cold shoulder look.

  7. I´m so glad I´m not the only one....

  8. I did jumpsuits in my teens but undressing for the bathroom got old. I'm sitting out all these trends, too.

  9. I agree completely with each of your observations. I am a practical person by nature and, living in Scotland, I am unwilling to wear anything that leaves my skin exposed to the cold winds and rain! I will not be trendy this season either, but at least I know I will be comfortable!

  10. Jumpsuits - almost every jumpsuit or jumper dress looks like an adult baby costume to me. What's even more disturbing is when it's a sexy adult baby.
bell sleeves - I love flamenco clothes so this gives me an excuse to wear similar clothes without looking too costumey.

    1. Add to the list: There's a spate of shapeless shirt dresses which scream housedress to me. The kind where you need a mop and bucket as accessories.

    3. I meant romper which I think of as a short jumpsuit best suited for the under age crowd. I do like the look of long pants jumpsuits.

  11. I can't agree more! I owned some bell sleeve garments ages ago and they were awful for all the reasons you stated, I just can't do that level if fussiness. I'm certainly taking a pass on all these trends. I'm with Karen for adding the shapeless shirt dresses to my personal head-scratching list. Thanks for sharing your grumpiness!

  12. Funny post. I initially was on the fence about the cold shoulder trend, but finally came around and like it. Not sure about the long sleeve version. Then again, I am learning to avoid the word never. The jumpsuit is another garment that I've come to like. Agree with KS, how many times will one go to the potty wearing a jumpsuit. Well, unless one is trying to meet their water quota for the day, a jumpsuit is not wear worthy...lol. Haven't jumped on the bell sleeve trend yet, but agree that it would likely be a pita if one wants to wear a jacket.

  13. Ha! Yes! I feel the same way about all these things!

  14. Obviously the year of irritating to wear fashion.

  15. You've said it perfectly. Glad to find I am not alone.

  16. You speak truth!
Have you heard about the jeans you buy with dirt already on them? Now I don't have to work in the Ag industry, but I can look like it.

  17. Fashion is pretty much irrelevant to most of real life. Loved your post.

  18. I enjoyed your comment on these trends....I must say I love three out of the four. Love the cold shoulder, bell sleeves and jumpsuits, can't stand the ripped jeans. Fashion is truly in the eye of the beholder.

  19. So true!! Ha Ha, we are slaves to the fashion gods, so I made myself something different to the cold shoulder look and it seems to be a hit. Maybe I should inform the big 4 pattern companies about the new trend!!

  21. ridiculously high heels especially at weddings when you have to have photos taken standing on grass. The twisted ankles and dangers of picking up little ones and the lovely effect on your polished wood floors...

  22. THANK YOU! For saying what I have been thinking about all these trends.

  23. While I don't wear any of these, none are as bad as the peter pan collar on an adult woman. :)

  24. LOL... sounds like my "I don't get it" list. Also on that list: necklines that are too wide and/or low to cover one's bra and cropped trousers.

  25. You had me until jumpsuits. I love a good jumpsuit. I think they can be very sophisticated or they can be fun. For me they are the perfect alternative to a sundress.

  26. I am fine with the cold shoulder look. I think it looks best with a short sleeve or 3/4 sleeve. It does look a little odd in a long sleeve.

I also don't mind the bell sleeve. I wouldn't wear it to go out to dinner but would wear it to work in the office.

The last time I wore a jumpsuit I was a toddler. However, I have seen some women look really great in them. I sometimes feel tempted to make one up but just never get around to it.

The torn up jeans...I don't get that look at all. I think it looks ugly.

However, fashion is in the eye of the beholder!

  27. Right on for all of them. Wonder why people are tempted?

  28. I don't get the cold shoulder at all. I do like bell sleeves for dress up drama. And, I will never wear a jumpsuit again (last worn in 6th grade and I felt like a Care Bear)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I too am avoiding these trends. I appreciate the outfits on others, but just keep reminding myself that it won't work in my world!

  30. I will never wear a jumpsuit again. I made and wore one in the 70's and it was a royal pain in the ass. I like the bare shoulders, but not with long sleeves, since as you said, if it's cold enough for long sleeves why on earth would I wear bare shoulders. I have one I made with elbow length sleeves and that works for me. But, certainly not in the dead of winter! The large hanging sleeve puzzles me as well. How does one not get them in the soup?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I completely agree with you!!

  32. Thank you!!! I remember wearing "rompers" in the late 60s (I was about 8 yo) and HATING them. Then jumpsuits came along in the 70s and I made one. Such a pain to use the restroom between high school classes and not be late. Now I look at them and shake my head. Same with the cold shoulders.

  33. Must be that I'm of a certain age but seems to me I've scene all these before and even worn many of them at one time or another but they sure don't appear in my closet or on me now. Must be a reason for clothing fads (other than what PT Barnum had to say about there being a sucker born every minuet)

  34. SO MUCH YES TO THIS ENTIRE POST. My intense agree required all caps abuse, sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lol! I agree with nearly all of that! The point that we differ is the cold shoulder I really like this tread!
But that statement sleeve/Bell sleeve, Imagine drop your huge sleeve in your soup on a hot date! Jumpsuits are not made for a bladder like mine! I would spend more time naked in the bathroom, than showing that "cute" jumpsuit. I also think of the nasty public bathroom floors! Eek!!

  36. I'm totally with you on this. The cold shoulder garments are awful unless one has nice shoulders and it is actually summer AND one is not in an office environment. Ugh. I got over jumpsuits after one day of skiing in bib overalls. I do love a flouncy bell sleeve, however, they are definitely a PITA.

  37. Amen, Amen!!! I went to a local outdoor concert last night and the cold shoulder was worn by most everyone. And, it looked dumb on the young and old alike. I relate to all the "fashion" mentioned to the return of stirrup pants in the late 80's.

  38. Thank you for this, I couldn't agree more!!
