Is it wrong?

The Sewing Lawyer is glad that a couple of readers noticed the little teaser at the very end of her last post.  So here are a few more tidbits.

In stash is this luscious pure wool fabric, purchased for me in Italy by a good friend a few years ago.  She claims to have forgotten giving  it to The Sewing Lawyer.  But she did.  Anyway, here is an extreme close up view of said fabric (there are about 5 little bumps to the inch so you're looking at about 2.25" worth of fabric).

Black, textured, with tiny sprinkles of red, white and green.  It's a little more vibrant in real life.

There are only 2 metres but I can get a suit (jacket and skirt) out of it if I use the pattern for this jacket again.

Pros:  It's a real fabric miser; I've got it fitted perfectly, and it's a cute and wearable shape.

So my question.  Given that I have dozens of patterns for jackets I have never made, is it wrong to make the same one again?

  1. With respect to this fabric, I think it's fine to use the same pattern. As you have a limited amount of fabric for a suit it makes sense to use a pattern that is miserly. I love that word! And anyway, noone will ever notice!

  2. No! It is perfectly right!! Should go together quickly and what's not to love about that? Lovely fabric.

  3. Not at all. In fact, with such a special fabric, I think it is wise to use a pattern that you know well and that you have worked through the fit previously. I love the fabric BTW.

  5. How about reversing the question. "Given that I have a cute, perfectly-fitted fabric miser of a pattern, is it wrong to have dozens of jacket patterns I may never make?"

  6. Absolutely NOT wrong! go for it. Gorgeous fabric..

  7. Definitely not! Should make a lovely jacket

  8. Not wrong! You know you will get a beautifully fitted suit out of it in beautiful fabric. No one will know and we won't tell!

  9. I agree...perfectly fitted jacket=make in every colour and fabric (that works)!

  10. No, it's not wrong to repeat a well fitting pattern and I'm so impressed that you are so petite that you can make a suit out of 2m which must be so useful with really expensive fabric or bolt ends. My question is "Do you really want a suit when the fabric would go so well with plain pants and skirts?". I know your career requires a very smart wardrobe but do consider the alternatives. It is very lovely fabric by the way!

  11. There's a reason they call them tnt patterns, and you are lucky to have one that matches the yardage you have. Go for it!

  12. A TNT jacket is a great idea, no problem with making a great pattern twice. I would say that I made this jacket in a Linton tweed myself a few years back and I just feel like the fabric was too bulky for this pattern. For me, the jacket never feels quite right when I wear it.
The fabric you have is truly stunning!

  13. Go for it. It's a cute pattern and if you can get a suit out of the fabric with it, what should be wrong with using the pattern again? I have plenty of burda patterns here, that I will never make and I still buy new patterns....

  14. It's called a TNT, aka, Tried and True! Go for it.

  15. No...it would be wrong to risk this fabulous fabric on an untested pattern!

  16. Hello - (1) Does it make you happy to make it in this pattern? (2) Will you look at it later and think "I should have risked" or "I'm so pleased how this turned out - and I did such a good job being careful and using every bit?" (3) Will you wear it and feel good in it? TaDa. Thanks for asking - hope my comments help at least a little bit. I love your blog. Nena.

  17. Do it! The first jacket looks great on you, and if you can get a suit out of 2m go for it.

  18. Tried and tested always works for me

  19. Its ok to make the same jacket just as long as you like it i guess

  20. Definitely not. The fabric is unique, and you will know how to make it look even more sensational. It will look wonderful on you. It's the fabric and how nice it will look on you that people will notice, not the pattern.

  21. It is right to make it again. The fitting issues are resolved, it will fit to a "T", and you love the style. Nothing wrong there!

  22. Heck, no! A TNT is priceless, and in a gorgeous fabric, who would ever know or care that it's the same jacket pattern? Looking forward to seeing your progress... :)

  23. When plants reproduce, they make the same flowers over and over - who argues with the beauty of a peony year after year even though it is nearly identical? Go for it!
