I confess: I do not have my fingers on the pulse of fashion. (This may not be news to you.)
I remember the first pattern I saw with an exposed zipper. It was in the January, 2009 issue.
Yuck, I thought. Nice skirt, except for that stupid zipper. I made the skirt. I put a demure invisible zipper in a seam at CB (where a zipper belongs).
I resisted the exposed zipper trend until very recently. I do love my LBD with the long metal zip. It took me 39 months to come to terms with this trend. It's probably just about over.
So imagine my alarm when I saw this last week.
At first I thought the good folks on Ravelry were putting a bunch of amusing 30 year old patterns up for posterity. No. This is a pattern by Bergère de France from their 2012-13 collection.
Here's another one. (It's designed for a yarn that includes lurex for "discreet sparkle".)
ACK!
Burda's doing it too.
I figure I have until fall, 2015 to stay in denial.
Lentement, mais surement... C'est tout. Tu peux aussi avoir TA mode. Le conformisme c'est "out" de toute façon. ;-)
ReplyDeleteOh I'm with you....it takes a while for some of this stuff to catch on - but I liked the exposed zippers...the puff ball sweater may take a little longer - beautifully written!
ReplyDeleteI really like the second sweater with the cables, although lurex is not what I would use. And I made a wild sweater with giant puffballs and other assorted oddities a couple of years ago. It gets a lot of compliments, but it's not your standard sweater. On the other hands, I'm still not really with the exposed zipper thing.... Oh, well.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely relate to your feelings. I am no early fashion adopter either. By the time I like the looks of something, it's pretty much finished!
ReplyDeleteWhat about some delicate little puffballs around a neckline or wrist instead of going whole hog? Maybe it is better to be a fashion "adapter" instead of adopter - you know pulling stuff back from the high fashion extreme to make it work better for real life.
ReplyDeleteThe 1st sweater looks like a break-out of vanilla chicken pox :O!!
ReplyDeleteFUNNY article, Kay ;D
Happy Canada Day, eh... (I'm whispering it from my wonderful Quebecois neighbourhood...)

Egad. Maybe a little calamine lotion will clear up those bumps! I shall happily remain out of touchy with today's fashion.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I'm concerned, you dress quite fashionably. I, too, tend to ignore what so-called "fashion mavens" dish up.
ReplyDeleteAm I tacky if I say that I like the second sweater just a little? No glitter yarn, though.
ReplyDeleteNancy, I'm with you--in the right yarn that second sweater could be lovely. I'll be more concerned if I see the football-sized shoulder pads and little floppy ties come back~
ReplyDeleteI think the only good zipper is a hidden one. I have seen many a dress spoiled by someone's idea of current fashion. Hopefully that trend has left the station!
ReplyDeleteHa, ha, I couldn't agree more on the exposed zipper fad. I've resisted it and will continue to hold out until everybody comes to their senses. On the other hand, I've given up after thirty years on expecting really trendy clothes from Vogue and try to use Burda as the canary in the mine, warning me that sooner or later, I'll be wearing one of their designs. I've noticed Burda follows pretty closely what's offered in the Promod line from France, which itself in a knock-off of runway fashions on the Continent.
ReplyDelete(And indeed, that plaid skirt pattern was the first one to make me blink and go, "Whaaaa?" Love your classic style and consistent arrival at quality cum class.)

Funny! I thought the same thing when I saw that exposed zipper skirt in Burda! I have my doubts as to when (if ever!) I'll like the puff ball sweater, but the other one is quite pretty (although too voluminous for me).
ReplyDeleteYou're hilarious! But I'm in the same boat. By the time my style sense (or lack thereof) comes to terms with the newest and brightest, it's almost passé!
ReplyDeleteThis post made me laugh out loud!
ReplyDeleteI always know when trends are done (I'm very fashion forward in this respect). How do I know? Why when I finally warm up to them! poof! they're done!
