Fashion shoot

So I wore the dress to work on Monday.  The good news is that it was supremely comfortable and attracted a few favourable compliments.  The maybe bad news is that sitting all day in a 100% wool doubleknit dress bags the bum out a little bit.  Not enough to deter those favourable compliments however.

Of course a quick steam brought it all back into place, before I took these pictures.  The curve is simply following my shapely backside.  (Right!)

Contrary to my conservative expectations, I really like that zipper!

Goodness it looks like I am maybe six feet tall.  I'm not.

Nor did I have any idea that light could penetrate black wool doubleknit.  The late afternoon sun was pretty strong.

And I'm pretty sure my legs are really not that white.

I got a new camera which allows me to take self-portraits untethered from the power outlet.  Welcome to The Sewing Lawyer's living/dining room.

But I should check for stray shoes in the background before setting up.

The only side-effect of sewing this dress with extra-wide side seam allowances is that the colour block seams don't line up exactly.

I'm pretty sure nobody will notice.

  1. I love it! Add some black textured tights to totally rock it (Spanx has the best patterns) Knee high boots would be killer too with a patterned tight peeking between the boot and the dress

  2. It looks fabulous - why did your back shot the other day make it appear like it was black on one side and grey on the other?! Love the back zipper. Happy Easter!

  4. Wow - what a great looking LBD! The diagonal seams and zipper make it so cool. I like how you exposed the zipper teeth but sewed the tape to the inside. A very nice dress!

  20. I love your dress! The zipper is absolutely perfect, and it is great to see a version without the color-blocking. I want one too! One question for you: you said you used fusible interfacing instead of a facing -- did you just fuse and then turn under the seam allowance to the wrong side?

    1. I did it in the other order - sewed the unfused facing pieces as if they were fabric, then sewed along the top edge. Then I trimmed the seam comnecting the facing to the dress and CAREFULLY pressed the facing starting at the seam, so it fused to the dress without wrinkles or distortion. This took some planning i.e. I had to finish the CB corner at the same time. Hope that helps.

  21. What excellent fit. The dress looks terrific on you. Is the zipper comfortable when sitting? It looks great, much better with the tapes inside.

  22. Better those white legs, than the PURPLE ones I see in Vogue Sewing Magazine all the time!!

While I am not a fan of the excessive airbrushing most mags indulge in, I do think Vogue really ought to do a wee bit of "colour-correction" on their models' legs; it's really "out of control" at times, bordering on the freakish!

I wonder if they are shooting in wintertime, and it's the redness from being out in the cold! Whatever it is, it looks like H-E-L-L! They airbrush everyone to death in Vogue FASHION magazine so it's not like they don't know about it!

  24. You look fantastic! Where did you find such a long zipper? Finding the right length zip seems to have eluded many sewing bloggers.
